Rural doctors welcome Victorian Coalition promise on rural generalise training
The Rural Doctors Association of Victoria (RDAV) has today welcomed a promise by the Victorian Coalition — announced by Victoria’s Health Minister, David Davis MP, at RDAV’s annual conference at the weekend — to fund an extension of the state’s Rural Generalist Training Program in a further parliamentary term. "This is an incredibly important announcement for all those living in rural Victoria” RDAV President, Dr Sue Harrison, said. “The doctors trained through this program are the ones who will be providing General Practice and acute medical care in Victoria’s country hospitals into the future. They will have the skills in emergency, obstetrics and anaesthetics that are so important in meeting the healthcare needs of those living in country communities.

RDAV Position Statement
The Rural Doctors Association of Victoria (RDAV) Management Committee is disappointed that the Federal Government has announced its intention: • to close General Practice Education and Training (GPET) with transition of its functions to the Department of Health by the end of 2014; and • to re-tender the 17 Rural Training programs provided nationally by regional and metropolitan training consortia which are currently contracted to deliver the Australian General Practice Training Program (AGPT).
