Why should I join RDAV?
RDAV values the membership of any medical student, doctor, generalist or specialist, with an interest in rural medicine in Victoria. RDAV membership is particularly strong from GPs who provide services to their local hospitals. RDAV members enjoy the camaraderie and support of their many rural medical colleagues. Membership ensures access to experienced advice and strong support for any member who encounters problems of any nature.
Further, strong total membership ensures that RDAV can continue to effectively promote the needs of rural doctors and their patients, both at a state and a national level. Even though individuals may not presently have the time to participate actively in RDAV activities, their membership adds to the collective effort.
RDAV represents members within the State and through RDAA at the National level, working closely with other State RDAs. This is necessary because both State and National Governments provide funding and lay down rules for rural practice. RDAs are committed to the ideal of a well-educated, well remunerated and well supported, nationally networked, rural medical workforce. RDAV has had some success with gaining on-call allowance, is fighting for a State remuneration package and has gained recognition for and lately commencement of a rural generalist training pathway.
Members receive information through a variety of channels and through an email group which enables information to be rapidly collated when issues and problems arise, enabling representation and effective action.
Industrial advice is available to members and a number of members have been given assistance with hospital negotiations. Authorisation was obtained from the ACCC in 2007 to represent medical groups, and in 2008 to collectively represent members in negotiations with the State Government. National and State Conferences are held annually.
